One of CyberArmy’s definitions of elite is as follows: “leet” adj. To have what one calls “leet” skills means that one’s skills exceed those of others around them. Elite syn.
According to the definition above, the prerequisites of being considered elite are not very difficult to accomplish. Many different interpretations can be drawn from CyberArmy’s definition of elite, as the wording of the definition suggests that being elite is a relative notion. At one extreme, the definition could be interpreted to mean that all that is required in order to be considered elite is to surround yourself with others whose skill levels are lower than your own. At another extreme, the definition might imply that in order to truly become elite, you need to constantly strive to be better at performing a particular skill than those you encounter. The former interpretation promotes laziness and complacency, while the latter promotes motivation and progression. That being said, the latter will be the topic of discussion for this issue of Path to Elite.
There are a number of questions that arise when pondering what it takes to really become elite. One of the most common questions is what are the steps that we need to take to achieve the goal of leetness? Where exactly is the beginning of the path that everyone seems to be on. How do we get started on it? The truth is, there are as many different paths to elite as there are people. That doesn’t mean that no matter what you do, you’re destined for greatness. Only with motivation, dedication, and excellence, can you be sure of success. Not all paths lead to hackerdom.
The foundation of the path to elite is skill development. Before laying the foundation, time must be spent carefully choosing a combination of skills that will work well together to accomplish a set of specific goals. The goals can be anything, really, and are personal in nature. In addition to the skills set, checkpoints should be established along the path to keep motivation at an optimum level. An example of a path to elite is as follows:
