Featuring Gothic Freak

1. Back story on handle. It was actually a nickname that a friend of mine gave me years ago. He died when he died from leukemia at a young age, so I mostly use it in memory of him.
2. Member Since? I believe it was the end of 2000 don’t remember exactly it was a long time ago.
3. Why did you join? I heard about the zebulun challenges and that was when i was really starting to get into computer security and such and figured it would be something fun to play around with and hopefully learn something i may not learn in other aspects.
4. Things you have done in C.A. , such as project and brigades? I started in windows irc under the CAIRC brigade wanna say that was in mid 2001. Worked my way up from there to the x/o under General Wewalkin. When he stepped down i took control of CAIRC until real life issues came up and i had to step down and retire. Since then i have come back to run CAU and breath new life into it. I was also a co-admin on a cairc server years ago.
5. Things you have done for C.A. as a leader? Started project botfire which at one time became a very large group and was moved from cairc to specops.Restarted CAU.
6. Most memorable moment within C.A.? The first day the site came back up under .net after i think it was like 7 months in between sites. Where CA showed its strength and stayed together just on irc.
7. Who was the most annoying person you have encountered in C.A? that’s a tricky question. there have been quite a few people that have annoyed me. but a single name does not stand out, and there hasn’t been anyone that i can’t stand, just the occasional annoyance.
8. Do you have any progtoges floating around? everyone wants to be like freak ;)
9. Who was the most influential person here in C.A? Actually phishy. back when i first started learning perl and playing with modifying the fong dev (yeah i’ve been around a while) he helped me out with understanding what a lot of it did and also helped me when i was having issues fixing some of the code that i was writing. and kept me from giving up on learning the language.
10. What have you seen happen or change since you joined C.A? almost everything. new site new domain multiple cincs from pengo to mryowler to snarks etc etc enstyne
11. What do you regret, if anything, about what has happened to C.A? the fact that we are barely on the edge of existence in respect to where we used to be.
12. What do you wish you could change about C.A? i want us back to our glory days, i was reading something in the library a couple weeks back. from DD i believe. and he said that with our site we need to be on the lead of the new sites. we should be able to constantly wow people with our design and code. We are a technology site, we should be on top of the technology. and i agree with him on that statement.
13. What direction do you see C.A heading in? I think its heading in the right direction. We have people that are working on the site again to improve it and bring it back to the glory that it deserves.
14. What do you consider your self here in C.A? An old school member.
15. What is your definition of a hacker? Anyone that wants to play with something and try to make it something its not designed to do. Kinda like my failed attempt at making a roomba that would stalk you instead of vacuuming…
16. Dif in white, gray, and black hats, to you? I don’t see a huge difference in any of them, they will all do every color in some point. (ie the virus writers that get jobs as security experts)
17. Do you work with computers in real life? I used to, i was a network admin for a few years then went into retail after the dotcom crash. I still kind of worked with them i sold them did basic repairs and upgrades. nothing near what i had the ability to do, but it was work and paid the bills.
18. What are your specialties, what do you bring to C.A? I have leadership skills, technical skills. I’m one of those labeled as a jack of all trades master of none.
19. What is your favorite C.A. past time? irc :) i think almost everyone enjoys that at some point.
20. Ideas for future C.A. fun, brigades, or projects? If i told you that i would have to kill you…just kidding all of my current plans are currently being worked on.
21. What do you consider is C.A. greatest accomplishments? surviving for a decade and going from a hacker portal to a strong community. Which will come back.
22. What are your favorite tools? vi(m), context (notepad on steroids), hammer
23. What is your favorite OS or distro? depends on what I’m doing. i prefer win for games. linux for development. and bsd for servers.
24. What is your favorite piece of hardware? my ginormous 24″ monitor :)
25. Who do you think has done the most for C.A? wa1800z, without him and countless others we wouldn’t have dinah.
26. Who, in your opinion, had the greatest influence on you or computers in general? there is no one person that i can name that has had the greatest influence. there have been a few. I don’t feel it would be fair to attribute one person in this aspect.
