Staff Corner

The first member of staff that answered our great list of interview questions ;) is int16h. This section, we at CaZine we hope to bring you one member of staff each issue. There is a reason why they are staff. Hard to tell sometimes, but it may pay to know them. Even if it doesn’t, it makes a fun read!!!
Delta Gen int16h OK, I had some spare time – so decided to try and answer these :P
1.) What is the back story on your handle?
Int 16h- Int 16h is an interrupt which provides keyboard services from the BIOS.
2.)Member Since?
Int 16h- This is no single answer to this, I used to hang around IRC and the site with various nicks before finally keeping an account on the new dinah system. Since sometime around 2000 I think.
3.)Why did you join?
Int 16h At the time, CyberArmy had a nice portal and proxy/wingate-lists, a large mostly like-minded community and then Zebulun challenges – that’s what made me properly sign-up rather than just loitering :P.
4.)What are some of the things you have done in C.A. , such as past/current projects and brigades?
Int 16h- Bits and bobs everywhere really, nothing of extreme importance which I can remember (with my notoriously bad memory!). I’ve ran IRC servers (the first IPv6-enabled server!), written some articles, contributed to various brigades & projects including my own, some small dinah patches, ideas, exposing people plotting to harm CyberArmy, etc.
5.)Things you have done for C.A. as a leader?
Int 16h- ^^
6.)What is your most memorable moment within C.A.?
Int 16h- G-lining scanjack? Haha. No, I’m really not sure that I could pick just one – I have so many good memories from CyberArmy.
7.)Who was the most annoying person you have encountered in C.A?
Int 16h- Again, I can’t pick one answer to this question either, haha. For most, it’s part of their charm and personalities, most really annoying people aren’t regular visitors to CA.net or CAIRC at least.
8.)Why?
Int 16h- …
9.)Do you have any proteges floating around?
Int 16h- Ignoring your wording of the question, implying that protégés float around in water like something common… No, not really. I used to have a lot of patience and time – now I don’t really have a lot of patience. It’s horrible knowing that I’ve changed – but I can’t help it.
10.) Why or why not?
Int 16h- ^^
11.)Who was the most influential person here in C.A?
Int 16h- There have been many over the years, people who members looked upto and trusted. Chawmp, Snarkles, etc were influential leaders of the past – now we have Enstyne.
12.)Through the recent ‘recession’ of C.A why did you stay? What did you feel you could give?
Int 16h- CyberArmy is an institution where long-term members are unable to completely depart from. The internet has changed so much since CA was founded, and the community has remained here throughout these changes. People are simply unable to completlely give up on the community or name.
13.)What have you seen happen or change since you joined C.A?
Int 16h- Nearly 10 years worth of internet history, including the web2.0 boom. The different CA backends, losing some features/brigades/people – gaining projects, the library, accomplishments
14)What do you regret, if anything, about what has happened to C.A?
Int 16h-
a) Poor leadership of the past.
b) Not moving forward with the rest of the internet in time to preserve member-numbers and improve site-content.
15.)What do you wish you could change about C.A?
Int 16h- The past few years.
16.)What direction do you see C.A heading in?
Int 16h- Hopefully one of new life, and radical changes which will give CA the boost it needs to become a respected & successful community and resource once again.
17.)What do you consider your self here in C.A?
Int 16h- Like Guinan or Deanna Troi from Star Trek TNG: Experienced, sometimes wise – but generally useless :P.
18.)What is your definition of a hacker?
Int 16h- A hacker is anyone who can or is willing to experiment with something, making it function in ways it wasn’t intended to – be this a car, electronics, software etc. If you’re looking for a more fitting, specific definition when it comes to the security scene – it would be someone who studies, tortures and exploits a device/software into doing what they want it to.
19.)What is the difference in white, gray, and black hats, to you?
Int 16h- I dislike labels/hattery like this. I doubt any one person in the world is all good, or all bad – just as nature is neither.
20.)Do you work with computers in real life?
Int 16h- Yes.
21.)What are your specialties, what do you bring to C.A?
Int 16h- Jack of all trades, master of none.
- I have experience in programming (Asm, C, Perl, PHP), Low-level+OS development, reverse engineering, network security & privacy, natural languages, arts. The amount of practiced knowledge I have has decreased a lot in recent years.
22.)What do you think that C.A needs to do in order to change the direction it has gone in and bring it back to the glory days of yore?
Int 16h- Less bollocks, more content. We don’t need brigades full of people fannying around doing glory-tasks – we need content, and different ways to accept and display content other than plain text. Original, up-to-date, useful content will bring in more members rather than stale re-works of tutorials which were around 10 years ago.
23.)What is your favorite C.A. past time?
Int 16h- Being drunk on IRC.
24.)Ideas for future C.A. fun, brigades, or projects?
Int 16h- We don’t need any more bloody brigades! :P. Seriously though, I have some kind of ADD where my interests go in cycles – last month I was back into music again, this month I’m into writing+publishing, next month my passion may be modding an IRC client to allow multimedia to be displayed. I hope I can have some fun or interesting projects again, but like some previous ones – they need members to contribute.
25.)What do you consider is C.A. greatest accomplishments?
Int 16h- Remaining online for so long, Media coverage from years ago, not giving in to becoming a generic YetAnotherPHPCommunityWebsite and having a unique system written in a great, flexible language.
26.)What are your favorite tools?
Int 16h- Vi(m), ssh, tcpdump, nc
27.)What is your favorite OS or distro?
Int 16h- This is something which has changed a lot over the years, so I’ll list a few of my favourites, if I may.
Slackware Arch Linux OpenBSD FreeBSD AmigaOS/AROS OpenVMS 28.)What is your favorite piece of hardware? – My netbook or AlphaStation (or an Amiga!) 29.)Who do you think has done the most for C.A? – Difficult to say, really. Chawmp, Enstyne, wa1800z, condor191 etc have done a lot over the years to maintain the services CA provides. Others have contributed a lot in other ways. There is no single answer, as the community as a whole contributes to making CA what it is. 30.)Who, in your opinion, had the greatest influence on you or computers in general? My old tutor – Simon, and a lot of old IRC+BBS friends from years ago (when the internet was such a nice place, not polluted by as many idiots).
